Ma'an and Shobak guide: the south's gateway and stays

Ma'an is Jordan's largest governorate by area, covering wide stretches of the southern desert. The city of Ma'an itself is about 220 km (roughly three hours) south of Amman on the Desert Highway, a main transit stop and a launch point for the south's most famous destinations: Petra about 40 minutes away, and Wadi Rum a little farther south. Gateway to Petra and Wadi Rum

Ma'an's central position in the south makes it a practical base. Many travellers stay around it or in nearby Wadi Musa close to Petra, then head out to both sites each day. From Ma'an you continue south to Wadi Rum to sleep in the desert, or west toward Petra. Shobak Castle

About 40 km north of Petra stands Shobak Castle (Montreal), one of the oldest Crusader fortresses in Jordan, built in 1115 on a conical hill amid open desert scenery. It has towers, tunnels, and a well cut into the rock, and it's far quieter than Karak Castle, which makes a visit a solitary experience for anyone who likes history away from the crowds.

Spring and autumn suit it best for the mild daytime weather. Summer is hot by day and cold at night because of the desert setting, and winter is cold with possible snow on the highlands. You reach it from Amman in about three hours by the Desert Highway, with Petra about 40 minutes from Ma'an, so the city works as a rest stop before you arrive.
