The town's most famous sight is a floor mosaic in St George's Church, a map showing the cities of the Holy Land, Jerusalem, and the Jordan River, considered the oldest known artistic map of the region. Around the town, old churches and houses hold more mosaic panels, alongside a museum and a school for mosaic restoration. Walking the old centre on foot turns up many of these panels.

Mount Nebo and the Dead Sea

About 10 km from Madaba stands Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have looked out over the Promised Land. From its summit you see the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea, and on clear days the hills of Palestine. From Madaba it's an easy descent to the Dead Sea shore in about half an hour, or a visit to the Baptism Site on the Jordan River, which makes the town an ideal launch point.

Spring and autumn are best for walking the town's sights. Summer days are hot but bearable in the highlands, and winter is cold with possible rain.
