The best time to visit the Dead Sea, by season

The best time to visit the Dead Sea in Jordan is spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November. The air is warm but not punishing, the water is comfortable, and the crowds are smaller than in peak summer. The Dead Sea sits about 430 metres below sea level, the lowest land on Earth, so it is always several degrees hotter than Amman. That single fact explains most of what you need to know about timing a trip.
Spring: March to May
This is the easiest season. Daytime temperatures sit in the mid-20s to low-30s Celsius, the water is warm enough for a long float, and the hills still hold a little green from the winter rain. Weekends fill up, so book your chalet a couple of weeks ahead. If you only go once a year, go now.
Summer: June to August
Hot, and honestly harsh in the middle of the day. Temperatures often pass 40C, and the sun at this elevation is strong. Summer still works if you plan around it: float early morning and after 4pm, and spend the midday hours in a shaded chalet or its private pool. It is also the cheaper, quieter season midweek, which suits travellers who do not mind the heat and want a better rate.
Autumn: September to November
Almost a repeat of spring, and many locals quietly prefer it. The summer heat breaks, the water is still warm from months of sun, and September weekends are busy before things calm down in November. Comfortable floating, soft evenings, good value as the season winds down.
Winter: December to February
The surprise season. Days are mild and pleasant, often warmer than Amman by a noticeable margin, which is exactly why people drive down to escape the cold up the hill. You can float on a sunny winter afternoon. But the nights get cold, and most chalet pools are not heated, so a winter trip is about the sea, the warmth of the lowest point on Earth, and a quiet shore, not poolside swimming. Confirm heating with the owner before you book.
What to pack, any season
- Flip-flops for the rough, salty shore.
- More drinking water than you expect. The dry air dehydrates you fast.
- A hat and strong sunscreen. The sun is intense even in winter.
- A light layer for winter and early-spring evenings.
Common questions
What is the single best month? April and October are the sweet spots. Warm water, manageable heat, long comfortable days.
Can you swim in the Dead Sea in winter? You can float on a sunny afternoon and it is pleasant. Swimming in a chalet pool is another matter, since most are unheated. Ask first.
Is summer worth it? Yes, if you plan around the midday heat and use the chalet pool. Float early and late, rest in the shade between.
