Two roads from Amman to Petra, half a day apart

Amman to Petra is genuinely two different roads, not two versions of one: the Desert Highway at roughly three hours, and the King's Highway at four to four and a half.

I drive down on the Desert Highway and come back on the King's Highway. The reason is practical: arriving early and unspent means you walk into the site the next morning at full strength, and the King's Highway deserves to be the point of a day rather than a tax on the first one. Is one day enough for Petra from Amman?

Not in practice, and the arithmetic is what says so. 235 km down and the same back is about six hours of driving in one day. The Petra gate opens at 06:00 and closes at 18:00 in summer, and runs 06:30 to 17:00 in winter, the main trail inside the site runs 8 km from the visitor centre to Qasr al-Bint, the Siq alone is more than 1,250 m, and reaching the Monastery adds around 800 steps.

Add the numbers up on paper: leave Amman at five in the morning, arrive before nine, walk for five or six hours inside the site, then three hours back, finishing after sunset. What you get is part of Petra and a drive home in the dark on empty. A night in Wadi Musa fixes both halves: you enter as the gate opens, ahead of the coaches, and the driving is split across two days.

Petra on the southern route: Aqaba and Wadi Rum

Petra sits roughly 100 to 120 km north of Aqaba, with Wadi Rum between them and slightly east. The practical point is that the long drive from Amman is not wasted if you stretch the trip by a day or two: from Petra you are closer to the Red Sea and the desert than you are to home.
