Which also means the pool's real hour in Wadi Rum is mid-afternoon. You come back from a jeep tour coated in fine sand after two to four hours in an open vehicle, and the sun is still on the water. That is when it earns what you paid for it. After dark everyone ends up in the majlis around the fire and the pool sits empty, so if you are picturing a night swim under the stars, adjust that expectation now.

What to check before you book

Message the owner on WhatsApp before you pay anything. Four questions cover it, and a good owner answers all four in a minute:

• Is the pool open on my dates? Ask this first. You cannot infer it from photos, and a seasonal pool gets drained and covered through the cold months.
• Is it heated? In Wadi Rum the answer is usually no, so ask rather than assume.
• Where does the pool sit relative to the tents? A pool in the open middle of a camp is visible to everyone sitting outside their tent. If privacy is the point, ask where it is and whether anything screens it.
