Aqaba travel guide: the Red Sea and where to stay

Aqaba is Jordan's only stretch of coast, sitting on the Red Sea at the far south, about 330 km (roughly four hours) south of Amman by the Desert Highway, or a short domestic flight of about an hour. It's the one place in Jordan where you genuinely swim and snorkel over coral reefs, unlike the Dead Sea where you only float. The water is warm and clear most of the year, and the beach chalets make it a full seaside holiday.
Swimming and snorkelling the reefs
The coral reefs run right along Aqaba's southern shore, so you don't need a boat to see the colourful fish; a mask and snorkel from the beach are enough. The South Beach area and the marine reserve hold the best-known snorkelling spots, and the dive centres there run trips for both beginners and experienced divers out to deeper coral and wrecks. The gulf water is generally calm, which suits families and first-timers.
What to do besides the beach
Beyond the shore, Aqaba offers glass-bottom boat trips to see the reef without getting in, water sports, and fish restaurants and markets along the waterfront. It also works as a base for pairing sea with desert: Wadi Rum is about an hour north and Petra about two hours away, so you can start a day snorkelling and end it among the dunes of Rum.
Best time to visit, and getting there
The best season runs from autumn through spring, when the weather is warm and pleasant and the water is right for swimming. Summer is very hot on the coast and can pass 40°C, so save the water for the morning. You reach Aqaba from Amman in about four hours by the Desert Highway, or by a short flight to King Hussein Airport. A chalet near the shore saves you the daily drive to the beach.
Where to stay: Aqaba chalets
Before you book, check three things: how close the chalet is to the beach or sea, air conditioning that can handle the coastal heat, and whether it fits your group. Most important, make sure the photos are of the actual chalet, on YallaChalet we verify that before any listing goes live.
We gather Aqaba's chalets in one place so you can compare them easily. Browse the Aqaba area to see what's available and message the owner directly on WhatsApp, with no commission and no middleman.
