The village is a residential place of roughly 1,983 people according to the 2015 census, not a tourist front built for visitors: houses, a school, small shops, and in practice the last place to buy water or whatever you forgot before you drive into the sand. In or a short way from the village are the Nabataean temple, the Abu Aineh springs known as Lawrence's Spring, Jebel Umm ad-Dami, Jordan's highest peak, to the south, and the Hejaz railway line running north of the reserve.

That is why the village looks smaller than first-time visitors expect. It is a starting point where people live, and the landscape they came for begins past it rather than in it. The Wadi Rum visitor centre, and the distances to it

Every visit starts at the Wadi Rum visitor centre: entry to the protected area is paid there and jeep tours are arranged with local guides, and it is your first stop before you go into the sand. The reserve covers about 720 square kilometres, and the village sits at its northern entrance.

The distances you need before you drive: 70 km from Aqaba, about an hour. About two hours from Petra. About 250 km and four hours from Amman. Leave Amman in the morning and you arrive in the afternoon, which is enough for a jeep tour before sunset and not enough to drive home the same day. The road itself is what decides you sleep a night in the desert. If you want a bed in a town after the sand, Aqaba stays an hour away are the nearest.

The road to the village is paved the whole way and needs no 4x4. The 4x4 is for the sand past it, and that is the camp's vehicle or your tour guide's job rather than yours.

What "near the village" actually means
